The sun penetration of the rotunda and the courtyards was investigated whilst the general restoration of the old museum was being planned, the implementation of which has been delayed so far (status 2010). In the case of the rotunda, this investigation served as a basis for deciding whether the dome-shaped roof opening can have clear glass and whether an additional mobile sun protection facility would then be needed to protect the murals from excessive solar radiation.

Renderings were produced for the investigation to depict the amount of sun on the surfaces on a daily and seasonal basis. In order to make an accurate statement about the duration of sun penetration on points on the wall, stereographic projections of the dome-shaped roof opening were produced in a sun chart (see Rotunda II section and sun penetration). This allowed the daily sun penetration times to be determined exactly at relevant points.

The examination of the courtyards was intended to show how far the sun can shine into the courtyards during the course of the year. Since there were no conservation requirements with regard to maximum illumination intensity for the courtyards, there was no need to provide protection from the sun using insulated glass with an appropriately low g-value in this case.
